Lancang Kuning

Lancang Kuning >> Edisi Bahasa Indonesia

Folklore from Riau

Datuk Laksamana was the leader of Bukit Batu Bengkalis in Riau. One day, he called two of his commanders, namely Commander Umar and Commander Hasan. They were assigned to Tanjung Jati to get rid of the pirates in the Senggoro area, where the fishermen of Bukit Batu make their living.

The obedient commander, Umar, left his beautiful wife, Zubaidah. Meanwhile, Panglima Hasan did not participate because it turned out that the news about the piracy in Tanjung Jati was just a ploy by Panglima Hasan to keep Commander Umar away from his wife Zubaidah and Datuk Laksamana.

Secretly, Panglima Hasan tried to seduce Zubaidah and promised a better life, but Zubaidah remained loyal to her husband. This made Panglima Hasan angry.

During the launch of the royal ship, Lancang Kuning, into the water, it suddenly stopped and didn't move at all. Panglima Hasan decided to take Zubaidah as a sacrifice for Lancang Kuning. And finally, it was successfully launched.

Shortly after Zubaidah's death, Commander Umar, who had just returned from Tanjung Jati, received a slander made by Panglima Hasan himself, that it was Datuk Lasemana who killed Zubaidah by making him a presumptuous shipyard victim.

Umar believed Hasan's persuasion, and this made Umar very angry. Commander Umar attacked Datuk Laksemana. Datuk Laksemana swore to Umar,

"You will sink with your ship when passing Tanjung Jati!"

Commander Umar finally realized the slander of Commander Hasan. A dispute with Panglima Hasan ensued. Commander Hasan died at the end of Commander Umar's dagger.

Commander Umar went to carry out the curse of Datuk Laksemana. He sailed to Tanjung Jati and drowned. Since then, the island of Bengkalis has been known as an area under the leadership of Datuk Laksamana.
