Kala Rau: Wise Choices, Definitive Outcomes

Edisi Bahasa Indonesia: Kala Rau

Folklore from Bali

Kala Rau embodies an evil spirit from Balinese mythology—a bodiless entity represented only by a head. His malevolent intent was to drink from Tirta Amertha, the water of eternal life reserved solely for the gods.

Dewi Ratih, aware of Kala Rau's sinister plot, promptly informed Lord Vishnu. Acting swiftly, Vishnu decapitated Kala Rau with his discus. Unfortunately, Kala Rau's head touched Tirta Amertha, granting him eternal life. Seeking revenge, the head pursued the goddess Ratih, resulting in lunar eclipses.

The tale of Kala Rau narrates the journey of Sang Hyang Rahu, shaping all aspects of time, including day and night. This narrative influences the nature of human births, like the tumultuous birth story of Jalandara that once disrupted heavenly realms.

In an alternate version, it's recounted that Kala Rau, born to Wipracitti and Singhika, disguised himself as a deity. Unmasked by Sang Hyang Aditya and Sang Hyang Candra, they swiftly alerted Lord Vishnu. When Kala Rau nearly succeeded in consuming Tirta Amertha, Lord Vishnu severed his neck using his discus.

Although his body perished, Kala Rau's head retained life due to the touch of Tirta Amertha. Enraged at Sang Hyang Aditya and Sang Hyang Candra for foiling his disguise, Kala Rau swore vengeance during the middle of the month, known as the Lunar Eclipse, as documented in Bali's statues and monuments. Fragments of the Kala Rau legend endure in Ciung Wenara Park, situated west of the Gianyar Regent's Office.
