Pati Enggang and Rio Brani

Harmony in Diversity: The Tale of Mount Batuah

Edisi Bahasa Indonesia: Pati Enggang dan Rio Brani

Folklore from Jambi

This folk tale from the Kerinci area in Jambi introduces two protagonists: Patih Enggang and Rio Brani. They are companions in hunting, relying on their skills to capture deer and other game in the forest.

Patih Enggang holds power in Selampaung under Rencong Telang's authority on Sangkar Island, while Rio Brani holds a title of eminence in Lempur. However, he is prohibited from using the title of Depati by the people of Sangkar Island.

During one of their hunting expeditions by the lake, they stumbled upon a serene spot now known as Duo Lake. It was there they encountered a beautiful girl by the lake's edge. They made a bet that whoever could win her heart would earn her hand in marriage.

Patih Hornbill made the first attempt but exhausted his breath midway. Gracefully conceding defeat, he granted Rio Brani an opportunity. Rio Brani succeeded in capturing the girl, who, to their surprise, hailed from the angelic realm and originated from Mount Batuah.

Deciding to wed the girl, Rio Brani chose to reside on Mount Batuah, while Patih Enggang returned to his village in Selampaung. Later, Rio Brani and the celestial girl welcomed a child named Wali Bujang, who, upon reaching adulthood, married an angel from Mount Bujang.
