Sungsang Thorny Thistles: Seeking Peace in Conflict

Edisi Indonesia: Onak Berduri Sungsang

Folklore from Bengkulu

In the past, Bengkulu was home to two Hulubalang leaders: Serunting Sakti and Rio Tabing. Despite their vast powers, harmony eluded them.

Their clashes were frequent and escalated into fierce battles. Initially, their troops faced off, yet the conflict persisted without resolution.

"Perhaps a one-on-one combat is best," proposed Serunting Sakti.

"Who's afraid?!" retorted Rio Tabing with zeal.

They readied themselves, invoking the God of Energy and focusing their minds. A burst of energy erupted in the sky, converging their powers to a single point in space.

"Grant me more strength, Lord!" implored Rio Tabing. God answered, empowering him to transform flat lands into hills.

Everything in his path lay in ruin, thorns and thistles upturned. Rio Tabing set the limits of his dominion.

"This marks the edge of my rule. Any of Serunting Sakti's descendants who cross this border will perish!" declared Rio Tabing. Nature calmed following his proclamation.

The conflict between Serunting Sakti and Rio Tabing ceased. The war ended, with no victors or vanquished. Both leaders suffered immense losses as their territories lay devastated.

The boundary established by Rio Tabing is now known as the Sungsang Thorny Onak area, a closely guarded domain till this day.

Moral Message: Seek Peaceful Solutions in Conflict

The story of Sungsang Thorny Thistles emphasizes the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions in conflicts. Unresolved battles bring losses to both sides. Additionally, considering the repercussions of our actions is crucial as our decisions can profoundly impact ourselves and others. Lastly, it teaches that establishing boundaries and wielding power should be done judiciously, avoiding unnecessary losses.
