The Legend of Batu Ampar

Badang: Strength and Wisdom in Batu Ampar

Edisi Indonesia: Legenda Batu Ampar

Folklore from Riau Islands

Once upon a time, in the archipelago of Riau Islands, there lived a small and frail man named Badang, who faced life's challenges with determination. Despite his diminutive stature, Badang grew into an honest, humble, and adventurous man. He traversed the islands, from Riau to Bintan, Daik, Pulau Buluh, and eventually reached Tumasik, known as Singapore today.

In Tumasik, Badang's extraordinary feats became legendary. He represented Tumasik in a showdown against a strong man from India. The Indian challenger laid down a challenge to Princess Tuan, the ruler of Tumasik, proposing a strength duel. If Badang lost, Tuan must surrender all her wealth, but if Badang emerged victorious, Tuan would have to relinquish Tumasik to him.

The competition unfolded on the East Coast of Tumasik, near Sentosa Island. The Indian contender showcased his might by effortlessly lifting a half-ton boulder over his head. Princess Tuan fretted over Tumasik's fate if Badang were to lose.

When Badang's turn arrived, he faced Mount Ledang and the Singapore Strait before effortlessly lifting the massive boulder into the air and shifting it from his right hand to his left.

Deciding to cast the boulder into the sea, Badang hurled it with incredible force. When Princess Tuan inquired about its landing spot, Badang responded that it fell approximately 10 nautical miles to the north, forming a beautiful arrangement of stones.

Unsatisfied, Princess Tuan dispatched an envoy to locate the boulder's landing site. Accompanied by Badang, the envoy arrived at the northern part of an island now known as Batam. The boulder was neatly arranged, creating Batu Ampar, and the area has been known by that name ever since.
