Love Tale from Bintan Island: Princess Pandan Berduri and Jenang Perkasa

Edisi Bahasa Indonesia: Putri Pandan Berduri

Folklore from Riau Islands

Once upon a time on the island of Bintan, in the Riau Archipelago, lived the sea people led by Batin Lagoi. He was known for his gentle demeanor and fair leadership, adored by the people for his kindness and wisdom.

One day, while wandering the coastline surrounded by thick pandanus bushes, Batin Lagoi heard a faint cry of a baby. Surprised, he searched for the source and found a beautiful baby girl nestled among the pandan leaves. Amazed and perplexed, he decided to take her home and care for her as his own, naming her Putri Pandan Berduri.

Years passed, and Putri Pandan Berduri grew into a graceful and enchanting young lady, admired for her beauty and elegance. Her presence captivated many, including a newcomer named Jenang Perkasa. Despite being a common trader from another island, Jenang Perkasa's polite demeanor and eloquence stood out, making him the talk of the town.

Curiosity about Jenang Perkasa reached Batin Lagoi, who, fascinated by the young man, invited him to a grand dinner with influential figures across the island. Batin Lagoi was impressed by Jenang Perkasa's manners and character, prompting a surprising proposal: to wed Jenang Perkasa to Putri Pandan Berduri.

Jenang Perkasa, taken aback by the offer, accepted with humility and grace, agreeing to marry Putri Pandan Berduri. Their union was celebrated with grand festivities, and soon after, Batin Lagoi, feeling aged, appointed Jenang Perkasa as his successor.

As a leader, Jenang Perkasa proved to be both respected and beloved by the islanders. His leadership, rooted in the traditions of the sea people, brought harmony and prosperity to Bintan. Together, Jenang Perkasa and Putri Pandan Berduri had three children, each becoming esteemed leaders in different regions of the island, while upholding the customs of the sea people.

Even after their passing, the legacy of Putri Pandan Berduri and Jenang Perkasa continued, remembered fondly by the sea people of Bintan for their contributions to the island's history and unity.
