The Mentor Cat

The Mentor Cat: Cat's Intelligence and Lessons of Wisdom

Edisi Indonesia: Kucing Sang Guru

Once upon a time in the mystical land of Lampung, animals possessed the extraordinary gift of speech and reason, allowing them to interact as thoughtfully as humans. Among them, the cat was revered as a mentor to other creatures. Its reputation for wit, wisdom, and fairness made it a figure of great respect and admiration. With its calm demeanor and sharp intellect, the cat became a guiding presence, offering insights to those who sought knowledge and guidance.

The cat had three pupils: the mighty tiger, the regal lion, and the loyal dog. Among these fierce beasts, the tiger stood out as the most intelligent. Eager for knowledge, the tiger was always inquisitive, probing beyond the realms of lessons and seeking wisdom in every corner.

One fateful day, the tiger approached the cat, requesting lessons in tree climbing. However, the cat, knowing it had to be wiser than the tiger, was reluctant to teach this skill. To deflect the tiger's persistence, the cat diverted its attention by suggesting a playful excursion. But the tiger was relentless, persistently urging the cat to instruct it in the art of climbing trees.

"Why do you want to learn this?" asked the cat. "Will you use it for good or for harm?"

"For anything!" replied the tiger.

"Knowledge should serve a noble purpose," the cat stated firmly.

"Will you teach me or not?" challenged the tiger with a threatening tone.

Feeling cornered by the tiger’s persistence, the cat realized it was no match for the mighty beast. If it were forced to teach the skill, the cat feared the tiger might misuse it.

"I will not teach you," declared the cat.

The tiger's patience ran out. Overcome with fury, it charged at the fleeing cat. The chase was swift and intense. As they neared a towering tree, the cat leapt gracefully onto its trunk, clawed its way up, and perched on a high branch, far beyond the tiger's reach. The tiger, mesmerized by the cat's agility, watched in awe. The very skill it had been seeking was now on full display.

"That is the skill I desire!" roared the tiger. "Teach me, or you will regret it!"

But the cat merely flicked its tail and replied,
"It is too late, for you have revealed your true intentions. Knowledge given to the wrong heart will only lead to disaster."

Realizing it had been outwitted, the tiger felt its pride shatter. Humiliation and anger swirled within it, and with a loud voice, it vowed:

"If I cannot defeat the cat, I will find another way to prove my superiority!"

The cat’s ears twitched as it heard the tiger's threat. Understanding the gravity of the situation, the cat resolved to remain vigilant for the rest of its days. From that moment on, whenever the cat relieved itself, it would bury its waste beneath layers of dirt or leaves, ensuring no trace of it could be seen by the tiger.

The Wisdom of the Cat

This tale became a timeless reminder to the animals of Lampung. The cat’s actions taught them the importance of wisdom, patience, and caution in dealing with those who might seek to harm, even among trusted acquaintances. It is better to conceal one’s strengths than to reveal them to those driven by greed or envy.

The tiger, despite its strength and intellect, had failed to master self-control and humility. The cat’s refusal to teach the tiger became a lesson in discernment: not all knowledge should be shared freely, especially with those who lack virtue.

As for the cat, it remained ever vigilant. Its habit of burying its waste was passed down from generation to generation, becoming an instinct embedded in cats everywhere.

Moral of the Story

Wisdom must be shared with caution. Not all who seek knowledge do so with good intentions. The cat’s foresight saved it from harm, and its cautionary tale echoes through time. Sometimes, the greatest wisdom lies not in what is taught, but in what is left unspoken.

Wisdom in Action: Employing Knowledge for Good

The tale conveys a moral lesson on the prudent use of knowledge. The cat's refusal to teach the tiger illustrates the importance of considering how knowledge might be used. It emphasizes utilizing skills and understanding for positive, beneficial purposes, avoiding harm to others.

The Pirate Crocodile

The Curse of the Pirate Crocodile: A Tale of Greed and Redemption

Buaya Perompak >> Edisi Bahasa Indonesia

Folklore from Lampung

A long time ago, few people dared to sail along the Tulang Bawang River. The reason? A giant crocodile was said to lurk beneath its waters, waiting to attack anyone who crossed its path. The villagers believed the beast was cursed and would devour anyone who attempted to sail through the river.

Not far from the river, in a small village, lived a kind-hearted girl named Aminah. She was known for her beauty and obedience to her parents. One day, her mother and father asked her to deliver something to a neighboring village on the other side of the river.

“My daughter, please be careful,” her mother warned. “If you see the crocodile, row as fast as you can.”

“I understand, Mother. I will return safely, I promise,” Aminah replied, reassuring them before stepping into her sampan (a small wooden boat).

With steady hands, she paddled quietly, hoping not to disturb the river’s stillness. But unknown to her, the giant crocodile had already spotted her. Silently, the beast glided through the water, watching her every move. Suddenly, with terrifying speed, it lunged at the sampan, flipping it over.

Aminah let out a scream as she was thrown into the river. “Help! Somebody, please help me!” she cried before the waters swallowed her whole.

Darkness consumed her. When she finally regained consciousness, she found herself in a strange place—a dimly lit cave with walls glistening like gold. She slowly stood up, her heart pounding. As her eyes adjusted, she noticed something shining in the darkness. Stepping closer, she gasped. Piles of glittering jewelry, gold coins, and precious gems filled the cave.

Just then, a deep voice echoed through the chamber. “You may take the treasures, but in return, you must stay here forever.”

Aminah turned in fear and saw the enormous crocodile staring at her. She trembled but remained still.

“Please don’t be afraid,” the creature said. “I am not a real crocodile. I was once a man—a pirate, cursed by a powerful witch for my greed. I stole treasures from innocent people, and as punishment, I was turned into this form. Now, I guard these riches in this cave.”

Aminah’s mind raced. She needed to escape, but how? Then, an idea formed.

“How do you travel between the cave and the river?” she asked, keeping her voice calm.

“There is a hidden tunnel that leads to the riverbank,” the crocodile admitted, not realizing his mistake.

Aminah nodded, pretending to accept her fate. But that night, while the crocodile was asleep, she carefully gathered as many jewels as she could carry and quietly made her way through the tunnel.

When she emerged on the riverside, she ran toward the village, calling for help. The villagers, overjoyed to see her alive, gathered around, eager to hear her tale.

Aminah’s parents embraced her with tears of relief. Over time, they sold the treasures and shared the wealth with their fellow villagers. No one in the village suffered from poverty again, and the legend of Aminah and the cursed crocodile was passed down for generations.

And as for the pirate crocodile? Some say it still lurks in the depths of the Tulang Bawang River, forever bound to its curse.

Moral Message

This story reminds us that wealth gained through wrongdoing carries a heavy price. While generosity can turn misfortune into something good, it does not erase the past. It also teaches us to be resourceful and courageous in difficult situations. By reflecting on this tale, we can learn that true prosperity comes not only from riches but from integrity and wisdom in our actions.

Folklore From Lampung

ONCE upon a time, the animals were able to talk to one another. They talked just like humans talk to other humans. All the animals lived peacefully in the jungle. They had a king, and their king was the cat.

All animals chose the cat as their king because he had all the knowledge and the skills. He was the wisest and the cleverest animals in the jungle. Other animals became his students. The cat was a generous and kind animal. He was willing to teach them everything.

One of the cat's students was the tiger. He was the most obedient student. Whatever the teacher asked, the tiger was always willing to do it. Days and nights, the tiger was with the cat. He wanted to master all the cat's skills. He wanted to be the best animal in the jungle.

"Master,  there is one skill you haven't taught me yet," said the tiger.

"It’s the skill how to climb trees. You are good at climbing trees, Master. And I want to have that skill," said the tiger.

Actually, the cat had a bad feeling against the tiger. The cat did not really believe the tiger's sincerity in becoming his student. The cat did not want to teach him the skill how to climb trees. He felt the tiger would be a super animal if he mastered the skill.

The cat knew the tiger's potential. Therefore he always prolonged the tiger's request.

"You have to wait. You are not ready to study how to climb the tree. Let me teach you another skill. It's how to sneak," said the cat.

In a very short time, the tiger mastered the skill. He could sneak perfectly. He was very happy. Then he asked his teacher to teach him how to climb the tree. And again the cat prolonged his student's request.

"Wait, you haven't mastered the skill how to swim," said the cat.

He hoped the tiger could not study the skill easily. He knew it's very difficult to swim. But the cat was wrong. Indeed, the tiger was a great animal. He could swim in just a minute.

The tiger became restless. He had a feeling his teacher did not want to teach him how to climb trees. However he just kept his feeling in his heart. And when the cat again prolonged his request to teach him how to climb trees, the tiger became very angry.

"Master, I'm your best student. And not only that, I'm your most obedient student compared to other animals. I'm always next to you days and nights and I'm willing to do anything you asked me. But why you don't teach me how to climb trees?" asked the tiger.

The cat knew he could not always hide it anymore. Sooner or later he had to tell the truth.

"My student, I have a reason. I don’t really believe in you. I am afraid you will use the skill to do something bad," explained the cat.

"What?!" the tiger was angry.

"Teach me now! Otherwise, I will kill you!"

The tiger attacked the cat. And the fight could not be avoided. The tiger was bigger and had more strengths than the cat. Slowly the cat was cornered, and he had no other choice but to save himself.

The cat ran away and when he found a big tree he immediately climbed it. The tiger chased him, but because he did not know how to climb trees, he just waited under the tree.

The tiger screamed, "Wherever you go, I will chase you. And not only that! When you defecate, I will eat your feces!"

The tiger once heard that the cat's power was in his feces.

And it has happened until now. That's why every time cats defecates, they always bury their feces with sand or soil. They are afraid tigers will eat their feces!***
