Once upon a time in the mystical land of Lampung, animals possessed the extraordinary gift of speech and reason, allowing them to interact as thoughtfully as humans. The cat had three pupils: the mighty tiger, the regal lion, and the loyal dog. Among these fierce beasts, the tiger stood out as the most intelligent. Eager for knowledge, the tiger was always inquisitive, probing beyond the realms of lessons and seeking wisdom in every corner.
One fateful day, the tiger approached the cat, requesting lessons in tree climbing. However, the cat, knowing it had to be wiser than the tiger, was reluctant to teach this skill. To deflect the tiger's persistence, the cat diverted its attention by suggesting a playful excursion. But the tiger was relentless, persistently urging the cat to instruct it in the art of climbing trees.
"Why do you want to learn this?" asked the cat. "Will you use it for good or for harm?"
"For anything!" replied the tiger.
"Knowledge should serve a noble purpose," the cat stated firmly.
"Will you teach me or not?" challenged the tiger with a threatening tone.
Feeling cornered by the tiger’s persistence, the cat realized it was no match for the mighty beast. If it were forced to teach the skill, the cat feared the tiger might misuse it.
"I will not teach you," declared the cat.
The tiger's patience ran out. Overcome with fury, it charged at the fleeing cat. The chase was swift and intense. As they neared a towering tree, the cat leapt gracefully onto its trunk, clawed its way up, and perched on a high branch, far beyond the tiger's reach. The tiger, mesmerized by the cat's agility, watched in awe. The very skill it had been seeking was now on full display.
"That is the skill I desire!" roared the tiger. "Teach me, or you will regret it!"
But the cat merely flicked its tail and replied,
"It is too late, for you have revealed your true intentions. Knowledge given to the wrong heart will only lead to disaster."
Realizing it had been outwitted, the tiger felt its pride shatter. Humiliation and anger swirled within it, and with a loud voice, it vowed:
"If I cannot defeat the cat, I will find another way to prove my superiority!"
The cat’s ears twitched as it heard the tiger's threat. Understanding the gravity of the situation, the cat resolved to remain vigilant for the rest of its days. From that moment on, whenever the cat relieved itself, it would bury its waste beneath layers of dirt or leaves, ensuring no trace of it could be seen by the tiger.
The Wisdom of the Cat
This tale became a timeless reminder to the animals of Lampung. The cat’s actions taught them the importance of wisdom, patience, and caution in dealing with those who might seek to harm, even among trusted acquaintances. It is better to conceal one’s strengths than to reveal them to those driven by greed or envy.
