Controlling Emotions and Avoiding Tragic Consequences: Lessons from Baginde Lubuk Gong
Edisi Indonesia: Baginde Lubuk Gong
Folklore from South Sumatra
In a prosperous village, there lived a renowned village head known for his immense wealth, Baginde Lubuk Gong. His wealth was immeasurable, boasting hundreds of livestock and vast rice fields surrounding the village.
Baginde Lubuk Gong had a beautiful and kind-hearted daughter named Putri, which means 'princess' in Indonesian, rather than a formal royal title. Putri Lubuk Gong's exceptional beauty and kindness drew the attention of many young suitors in the village. However, her father consistently set exceptionally high standards for those seeking her hand in marriage, making it impossible for anyone to meet these criteria.
One day, a courageous young man and another village leader proposed to Putri Lubuk Gong. Yet again, Baginde Lubuk Gong set arduous conditions for them. The day of judgment arrived, but the young man and his entourage failed to appear. Baginde Lubuk Gong waited for days, even months, but they remained absent.
A year later, the group finally returned, bearing everything that Baginde Lubuk Gong had demanded. They brought seven sets of clothing, numerous livestock, and even firewood piled as high as a hill.
Though slightly disappointed by their delay, Baginde Lubuk Gong was overjoyed and planned an extravagant wedding for his daughter. He departed abroad to procure luxurious wedding necessities.
During this time, the prospective groom grew suspicious due to the prolonged delay in their marriage. Learning that Baginde Lubuk Gong was prolonging his daughter's wedding, the groom became consumed by negative thoughts, leading to a tragic decision.
In a fit of despair and rage, the groom abducted Putri Lubuk Gong. This tragic act resulted in the disappearance and later discovery of Putri Lubuk Gong's lifeless body.
Upon Baginde Lubuk Gong's return to the village, he learned of his daughter's fate. Overwhelmed by grief, Baginde Lubuk Gong was filled with anguish and rage. He cast aside all the dowry and goods he had acquired from abroad in preparation for his daughter's wedding.
Despite his profound sorrow, Baginde Lubuk Gong refrained from punishing the remorseful groom. Instead, he invited the young man to reside in his home, filling the void left by his departed daughter.
