Hang Tuah: Trials, Triumphs, and Legacy

Edisi Indonesia: Legenda Hang Tuah

Folklore from Riau

In ancient times in the Riau region, a gallant knight named Hang Tuah was born. His adventures began when he was merely ten years old, sailing across the South China Sea with his four loyal friends: Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir, and Hang Lekiu. Despite encountering gangs of pirates multiple times, these five friends always emerged victorious. Their bravery reached the ears of His Majesty's Treasurer, the King of Bintan, who adopted them as his sons.

At the Majapahit palace, Hang Tuah faced a perilous situation. Taming Sari, an aged yet formidable warrior, suddenly went berserk. Brave and resolute, Hang Tuah confronted Taming Sari and emerged victorious. In recognition of his valor, he was appointed Admiral and gifted the Taming Sari keris. However, slanderous accusations from Patih Kerma Wijaya incensed the King of Majapahit, resulting in Hang Tuah's expulsion from Melaka.

Departing for Indrapura, Hang Tuah was summoned back to Melaka and reinstated as its Admiral. His prowess wasn’t confined to his homeland; during his journey to China, he confronted the Portuguese in Chinese ports and adeptly diffused conflicts. Upon returning to Melaka, Hang Tuah faced a retaliatory assault led by the Portuguese Governor in Manila.

In the midst of intense combat, Hang Tuah sustained a grave wound from a Portuguese musket ball. Catapulted seven meters and plunging into the sea, Hang Tuah braved his fate. Fortunately rescued, the war concluded inconclusively. As his health recuperated, Hang Tuah decided to retire from serving as Melaka's Admiral due to his advancing age. He opted for seclusion atop Jugara hill in Melaka, cherishing memories brimming with heroism and dedication.
