The King's Decision and the Seeds of Jealousy
In the prosperous kingdom of Pasir Batang, Prabu Tapa Agung, the wise and aging king, faced a crucial decision. He had ruled with fairness and wisdom for many years, and now, he wished to retire and pass the throne to his youngest daughter, Purbasari. She was kind-hearted, humble, and beloved by the people.
However, this decision enraged her elder sister, Purbararang. Proud and ambitious, she believed she was the rightful heir. "You cannot ask her to be queen, Father! I am the eldest! The crown belongs to me!" she protested.
But Prabu Tapa Agung stood firm in his decision, for he believed leadership was not about age but about wisdom and compassion.
Furious, Purbararang sought the help of her cunning fiancé, Indrajaya. "If Purbasari becomes queen, we will lose everything," Indrajaya warned. Together, they hatched a wicked plan.
The Curse and the Exile
Desperate to secure her claim to the throne, Purbararang and Indrajaya sought the help of a powerful witch who resided deep within the shadowy heart of the forest. Legends spoke of her as a being of dark magic, feared even by the bravest warriors. With a knowing smirk, the witch agreed to curse Purbasari, whispering ancient incantations over a bowl of enchanted water. The moment the spell took hold, Purbasari's once-radiant skin turned pale and blotchy, covered in grotesque black spots that spread like ink across a parchment.
When Purbararang saw the curse take effect, she rejoiced in cruelty, wasting no time in humiliating her younger sister. "A queen must be perfect! Look at you now!" she sneered, her voice laced with mockery. "You are cursed and unworthy of the throne! Who would follow a ruler as hideous as you?" The court, under her influence, whispered in agreement, afraid to defy the ambitious princess.
With the weight of the curse upon her and the jeers of the palace echoing in her ears, Purbasari was dragged away from the kingdom, her fate sealed by her sister’s deception. Banished into the depths of the jungle, she was left to wander alone amidst the towering trees and tangled vines, her heart heavy with sorrow.
Yet, even in her despair, Purbasari did not curse her fate. As she gazed upon the vast, untamed wilderness before her, she resolved to endure. Little did she know that in this exile, she would find not only solace but also a destiny far greater than she had ever imagined.
The Guardian of the Forest
Heartbroken and alone, Purbasari wandered the jungle. She spent her days among the animals, who, sensing her gentle soul, grew fond of her. However, one creature stood out—a mysterious black monkey named Lutung Kasarung.
Unlike ordinary monkeys, Lutung Kasarung was wise, could speak, and possessed magical powers. In truth, he was no mere beast but Sanghyang Gurumina, a celestial being disguised as a monkey, sent to the mortal world as part of his divine journey.
Seeing Purbasari’s sorrow, Lutung Kasarung vowed to help her. He led her to a secluded place in the forest, where he used his powers to create an enchanted lake. "Bathe in this water, and your true self will be restored," he told her.
As soon as Purbasari stepped into the shimmering lake, the curse was broken. Her radiant beauty returned, and her skin glowed even more than before.
Filled with gratitude, Purbasari embraced her newfound hope. "I must return home," she declared.
The Trials of Worthiness
Upon arriving at the palace, Purbasari’s presence shocked Purbararang. Instead of welcoming her back, Purbararang devised another challenge. "If you truly deserve the throne, we must compare our beauty. A queen must have the longest, most beautiful hair!"
The royal court gathered as the king’s ministers measured the sisters’ hair. To Purbararang’s horror, Purbasari’s hair was not only longer but also shinier and more elegant.
Unwilling to accept defeat, Purbararang made one final demand. "A queen must have a handsome husband! My fiancé, Indrajaya, is the most handsome man in the kingdom. If your fiancé is more handsome than mine, then you may take the throne!"
Purbasari hesitated. She had no fiancé. But before she could speak, Lutung Kasarung stepped forward.
Purbararang burst into laughter. "You expect to marry a monkey?" she mocked.
But before she could gloat any further, a dazzling light surrounded Lutung Kasarung. Before their eyes, he transformed into a breathtakingly handsome man, more radiant and noble than Indrajaya himself.
Gasps filled the palace as the truth was revealed—Lutung Kasarung was no ordinary creature but a celestial prince.
With Purbararang defeated, Prabu Tapa Agung declared Purbasari the rightful queen.
Forgiveness and Redemption
Despite all that had happened, Purbasari held no hatred for her sister. "A kingdom must be built on love, not revenge," she said kindly. She forgave Purbararang and Indrajaya, allowing them to remain in the palace under her rule.
As queen, Purbasari led the kingdom with wisdom and kindness, with Lutung Kasarung by her side as both her protector and beloved husband.
And so, in the heart of West Java, the legend of Lutung Kasarung became a timeless tale of love, jealousy, and redemption—one that continues to be told to this day.
