Adhering to Guidance: Kelingking's Valiance and Dedication

Edisi Indonesia: Kelingking

Folklore fromRiau Islands

A folklore from the Riau Islands tells the tale of Kelingking, a young man from a humble village. Growing up without a mother, Kelingking lived a simple life alongside his father and two brothers, Salimbo and Ngah.

One day, as an adult, Kelingking embarked on a journey abroad. Although his father was reluctant, he granted Kelingking permission. Armed with seven ketupats as provisions, Kelingking's path led him to a dense forest.

Taking shelter under a shady tree, Kelingking dozed off and entered a dream. In this vision, he received instructions on finding a life partner. Despite following these directions diligently, there was no sign of a princess. Disappointed, Kelingking stowed away the remaining fish head he had cooked in irritation.

Fate guided him to a village where a king hosted a competition to remove a troublesome fish head from the palace. Recognizing the fish head as his own, Kelingking, though small in stature, managed to lift and relocate it, winning the competition. Graced with happiness, he was offered the king's daughter as a reward.

Ensuring his family joined him in the palace, Kelingking bestowed immeasurable joy upon his family and society.

Moral: Courage, Loyalty, and Reverence for Guidance

The story emphasizes courage, loyalty, and respect for guidance. Kelingking's modest beginnings didn't deter him from venturing forth and adhering to the dream's instructions. Although seemingly futile initially, his altruistic deeds inadvertently steered his life towards a significant transformation.

His fidelity to the guidance, though initially perplexing, led to great achievements. The moral message revolves around having the courage to follow life's guidance, even when unclear or seemingly insignificant. It highlights how every selfless act, regardless of its initial impact, can yield extraordinary outcomes.
