Long ago, in a small village near Setu Babakan, there lived a humble fisherman named Jaka and a beautiful young woman named Siti, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Despite their differences in social standing, their love for one another grew strong, nurtured by quiet moments by the lake’s edge.  

One evening, as the sun dipped low, painting the waters golden, Jaka held Siti's hands and whispered, "I will speak to your father tomorrow. My love for you is stronger than his disapproval."  

Siti smiled but fear flickered in her eyes. "Jaka, you know my father. He values wealth above all. I fear what he might say."

True to her worries, the next day, Siti’s father scorned Jaka’s proposal. "You dare come here with empty hands? What can you offer my daughter but a life of struggle?"

Humiliated but undeterred, Jaka vowed to return one day as a man worthy of Siti. "Wait for me," he pleaded with her under the moonlight. "No matter how long it takes, I will come back for you."

Siti promised, tears glistening in her eyes. "I will wait, Jaka. No one will take your place in my heart."

But time moved slowly. For three long years, Siti faithfully waited, turning away every suitor her father presented. Yet Jaka did not return.  

The Day of Despair  

On the fourth year, Siti’s father, weary of her refusal, arranged her marriage to a wealthy young man from another village. "This is for your own good, Siti," he said sternly. "Jaka will not return. Accept this match and move on."

On the day of her wedding, Siti could no longer contain her despair. Clad in her bridal finery, she ran through the village, her heart heavy with grief. Reaching the banks of Setu Babakan, she wept bitterly. "Oh, lake spirit," she cried, "if Jaka cannot return to me, then let this sorrow end here."  

She waded into the water, her tears mingling with the ripples, and threw herself into the lake’s depths.  

The Transformation  

As Siti sank beneath the surface, something extraordinary happened. A gentle light enveloped her, and the lake spirit appeared in a shimmering form. "Child," the spirit spoke, "your love is pure, and your pain has touched even the waters. I cannot return Jaka to you, but I can offer you another path."  

With those words, Siti’s form changed. Her limbs became sleek and strong, her sorrow transforming her into a graceful white crocodile, her scales glimmering like pearls under the moonlight.  

From that day forward, villagers spoke of the White Crocodile of Setu Babakan, a guardian spirit who emerged at dusk, gliding across the lake as if searching for something—or someone. Some say she waits for Jaka still, while others believe she protects the lake in his honor, a testament to their unfulfilled love.

Even now, the whispers of Siti's tale linger in the air around Setu Babakan. Locals say that if you sit by the lake on a quiet evening and listen closely, you might hear the soft cries of the White Crocodile, a timeless reminder of love’s power and the sacrifices it demands.
