Bujang Kelana and Intan Suri

The Legend of Chicken Cage Island: Bujang Kelana’s Heroic Quest for Justice

A long time ago, in a quiet village in Riau, there lived a wealthy but despised man named Pendekar Katung. Though his riches were vast, his character was far from admirable. He was known for his cruelty and temper, and the villagers whispered tales of his wrath behind closed doors. He often gambled his fortune away, and when luck turned against him, he would command his guards to attack his opponents in fits of rage.

One of Pendekar Katung’s favorite pastimes was cockfighting. Among his prized possessions was a fierce rooster that had never known defeat. Many had tried to best him in the ring, but all had failed.

One fateful day, Pendekar Katung issued a challenge to Datu Buta, a man of humble means but great courage. Datu Buta was known for his sharp mind and fairness, and he accepted the challenge without hesitation.

As the sun rose, villagers gathered around the fighting ring. The tension was palpable as both men presented their roosters. The fight began, and at first, the two birds were evenly matched, each displaying remarkable agility and ferocity. But as the fight wore on, Pendekar Katung's rooster began to falter. With one final blow, Datu Buta’s rooster triumphed, leaving the crowd in awe.

Pendekar Katung, consumed by humiliation and anger, accused Datu Buta of cheating.

“You must have used black magic!” he bellowed.

“I did no such thing!” Datu Buta replied, standing firm.

But Pendekar Katung would not listen. “Guards! Attack him!” he shouted.

Though Datu Buta fought valiantly, he was outnumbered and overpowered. Defeated but unbroken in spirit, he retreated to tend to his wounds. The situation grew worse when Pendekar Katung, in a fit of vengeance, abducted Datu Buta’s beloved daughter, Intan Suri.

A Hero Appears

Weeks passed, and the village lived in fear of Pendekar Katung’s tyranny. One day, a wandering young man named Bujang Kelana arrived at the village. Resting under a large tree near Pendekar Katung’s home, he noticed a young woman by the window, her face etched with sadness. Intrigued, he approached her.

“Why do you look so troubled?” he asked gently. “Perhaps I can help.”

The young woman, none other than Intan Suri, explained her plight. Bujang Kelana, moved by her story, vowed to rescue her.

Under the cover of night, he infiltrated Pendekar Katung’s home. The guards, caught off guard, attacked, but Bujang Kelana’s martial prowess proved unmatched. One by one, the guards fell, and he freed Intan Suri from her captivity. Together, they escaped and returned to her father’s home.

Tragedy Strikes

Datu Buta was overjoyed to see his daughter again, and Intan Suri and Bujang Kelana, having grown close during their escape, found themselves falling deeply in love. But their happiness was short-lived.

Enraged by the loss of his captive, Pendekar Katung gathered an army of men and marched to Datu Buta’s home. A fierce battle ensued, with Bujang Kelana fighting valiantly against overwhelming odds. Against all expectations, he managed to turn the tide and defeat Pendekar Katung’s forces.

However, in the chaos, tragedy struck. Intan Suri was gravely injured by one of Pendekar Katung’s guards. Despite their efforts to save her, she succumbed to her wounds.

Devastated, Bujang Kelana could not bear to stay in the village that had brought him both love and loss. In a moment of anguish, he took a small chicken cage from Datu Buta’s home and hurled it into the sea.

“If even this cage turns into an island, I will never return to this cursed place,” he declared before disappearing into the horizon.

The Island Emerges

To the villagers’ astonishment, the chicken cage began to transform. Slowly but surely, it grew, its edges expanding until it became an island. The villagers named it Pulau Sangkar Ayam—Chicken Cage Island—as a reminder of the extraordinary events that had unfolded.

Even now, the legend lives on, whispered among the villagers of Riau. It serves as a tale of courage, love, and the enduring scars of loss, etched into the land itself.

Moral Message: Courage Triumphs Over Injustice

This story conveys a powerful message about the importance of courage and justice. Bujang Kelana exemplifies bravery in standing up to Pendekar Katung’s tyranny, showing that even in the face of overwhelming odds, courage can confront injustice.

Though the story ends tragically with the loss of Intan Suri, it serves as a reminder that acts of bravery and selflessness can inspire change and hope. It also highlights the consequences of wickedness, as Pendekar Katung’s cruelty ultimately leads to sorrow and disgrace.

Through the character of Bujang Kelana, the tale promotes values such as kindness, empathy, and the willingness to help those in need, even at great personal risk. In doing so, the story encourages readers to uphold justice and act with integrity, no matter the challenges.
