Edisi Bahasa Indonesia: Legenda Beru Ginting Sope Mbelin

Folklore from North Sumatra

In Indonesia's rich tapestry of cultural diversity, a treasury of stories abounds from diverse tribes and regions. Among these narratives lies the cultural legacy of the Karo people, an ethnic group nestled in North Sumatra. Their tradition is adorned with a wealth of oral tales, including the legend of Beru Ginting Sope Mbelin. This tale encapsulates values of benevolence, resilience, and the retribution that echoes through the folklore of the Karo culture, steeped in an oral tradition that enriches their heritage.

The story unfolds around Beru Ginting Mergana, driven by the desire to protect his family, leading him into a tragic gamble. Poisoned by his own younger sibling, Ginting Mergana met his demise, forever altering the life of Beru Ginting Sope Mbelin, who, thereafter, navigated the complex vicissitudes of an orphaned existence.

Residing with his malevolent uncle and aunt, who sought to seize his father's inheritance to no avail, Beru Ginting faced adversity but stood resilient.

Attempting to gain their favor, Beru Ginting formed a cooperative farmer's group. However, his uncle, still harboring malevolence, sought to sell him away.

On his journey, Beru Ginting encountered two Sibayak, who offered him cloth. He found kindness in Tengku Cheeserun Batu Mbulan and Granny Uban.

Ultimately, Beru Ginting crossed paths with Datuk Rubia Gande's grandmother, whose benevolence was pivotal. Through the assistance of the Danggur Dawa-Dawa bird, he united with Karo Mergana, culminating in their union.

Returning to Beru Ginting's village, they were met with jubilation. His uncle and aunt were humbled, bearing the consequences of their unkindness.

Moral Message: Kindness, Fortitude, and Retribution for Evil

This narrative beautifully illustrates the virtues of kindness and fortitude exhibited by Beru Ginting Sope Mbelin in confronting life's tribulations. Simultaneously, it serves as a stark reminder that the actions of the malevolent uncle and aunt eventually reaped the consequences they sowed. This story imparts the essence of acting with benevolence in the face of adversity, while underscoring the inevitable repercussions of wrongful deeds.
