Si Lancang >> Edisi Bahasa Indonesia
Folklore from Riau
Long ago, in the Kampar region, lived a young man named Si Lancang. He lived with his mother, and they worked as farm laborers.
One day, Si Lancang decided to venture out to improve their lives. They were living in poverty, and he believed that seeking opportunities elsewhere was the best way to change their fate.
Si Lancang: "Mother, I am determined to make a better life for us. I will leave Kampar and seek my fortune elsewhere."
Mother: "My son, be careful on your journey. Remember that no matter how far you go, you must never forget where you came from."
Si Lancang set out on his journey and, over time, he became a successful merchant. He acquired many ships, luxurious goods, and even took seven wives. Unfortunately, he forgot about his mother and the humble beginnings they shared.
Years later, Si Lancang decided to return to Kampar. News of his return reached his mother, who was overjoyed. She hurried to meet her son, eager to see him again.
Mother: "My son is returning! I can’t wait to see him and the wonderful life he must have made for himself."
When Si Lancang arrived in Kampar with his seven wives, he was met by his mother. However, he refused to acknowledge her.
Si Lancang: "I do not know this woman. She is a stranger to me."
The mother’s heart was broken by his rejection. Feeling deeply hurt and betrayed, she returned home, determined to make Si Lancang pay for his ingratitude.
Back at her house, she took out an heirloom mortar and a traditional winnowing basket. In her sorrow and anger, she invoked a curse upon Si Lancang.
Mother: "You have forgotten where you came from, and for that, I curse you. May you face the consequences of your actions."
As soon as she finished her curse, a violent storm swept through the sea. Si Lancang, who was unaware of the curse, saw his ships and treasures being destroyed by the tempest.
Si Lancang: "What is happening? My ships! My wealth! Everything is being destroyed!"
Despite his realization of his wrongdoing, it was too late. The storm ravaged his fleet and all that he had accumulated. Si Lancang's successful life was shattered in an instant.
In the end, Si Lancang learned a harsh lesson about the importance of remembering one's roots and the consequences of forsaking family.
