The Teenager with a body as big as a buffalo

Once upon a time in Bali, there lived a humble couple who longed for a child. They had been married for many years, yet no child was born to them. Desperate, they turned to the gods, praying day and night with unwavering devotion.

"Oh, mighty gods, bless us with a child to bring joy and purpose into our lives."

The gods heard their prayers, and soon, the wife became pregnant. The couple was overjoyed, and when the time came, she gave birth to a baby boy. They named him Kebo Iwa.

However, from the very beginning, Kebo Iwa was unlike any ordinary child. He had an enormous appetite—far greater than that of any newborn. No matter how much he ate, he always seemed hungry. Day after day, his body grew at an astonishing rate, and by the time he was a teenager, he was as massive as a buffalo. His strength was unparalleled, and people marveled at how he could uproot trees with his bare hands.

His size and power made him a legend in the village, but his insatiable hunger soon became a burden. His parents struggled to keep up with the enormous amount of food he needed, and before long, they exhausted all their savings. Unable to provide for him any longer, they turned to the villagers for help.

The Guardian of the Village

The kind-hearted villagers took pity on Kebo Iwa and worked together to build him a larger house, as he had outgrown his parents’ home. They also helped provide food, offering him rice, meat, and vegetables in large quantities. In return, Kebo Iwa used his incredible strength to aid the villagers—he built dams, dug wells to provide fresh water, and protected the village from wild animals and invaders.

Despite his enormous size and fearsome appearance, Kebo Iwa had a gentle heart. He never misused his strength and was always ready to help those in need. Because of his generosity and kindness, the villagers respected him deeply and saw him as their protector.

But even with the villagers’ support, feeding Kebo Iwa became an impossible task. Eventually, they could no longer afford to prepare his meals. Understanding their struggle, Kebo Iwa agreed to cook his own food, and in gratitude for their kindness, he continued to defend and serve the village.

The Trickery of Majapahit

Meanwhile, on the island of Java, the powerful Majapahit Empire sought to expand its rule. Their armies had conquered many lands, but Bali remained beyond their grasp. The reason was clear: Kebo Iwa. His immense strength made the Balinese people nearly invincible, and as long as he stood, Majapahit knew they could not claim the island.

The empire’s Chief Minister, Gajah Mada, was a cunning strategist. He devised a plan to eliminate Kebo Iwa, not through battle—where he was unbeatable—but through deception.

The Majapahit envoys traveled to Bali with a message of peace. They spoke with admiration for Kebo Iwa, praising his legendary strength and generosity.

"Mighty Kebo Iwa, we humbly seek your help. Our land has been suffering from a terrible drought, and our people are desperate for water. Only you, with your great power, can dig wells deep enough to reach fresh water and save us."

Flattered by their words and always willing to help those in need, Kebo Iwa agreed without hesitation. He left his beloved village and traveled to Majapahit, unaware that he was walking into a trap.

Upon arriving, he immediately began digging. With each mighty stroke of his hands, the earth trembled, and the hole grew deeper. Days passed, and Kebo Iwa worked tirelessly.

Then, when he had dug deep into the ground, the Majapahit soldiers, following Gajah Mada’s orders, acted swiftly. They poured tons of limestone and boulders into the well, burying Kebo Iwa alive. Trapped beneath the weight of the collapsing earth, he struggled, his mighty hands clawing at the walls, trying to free himself. But even his immense strength could not save him.

His roars echoed through the land, shaking the very ground beneath the soldiers’ feet. The villagers in Bali felt a tremor and sensed something terrible had happened. Yet, as the dust settled, the mighty warrior’s voice faded, swallowed by silence.

Kebo Iwa, the guardian of Bali, had perished—betrayed not by strength but by deception. His fall marked the end of an era, leaving the island vulnerable to conquest.

The Fall of Bali

With Kebo Iwa gone, Bali was left vulnerable. The mighty protector who once safeguarded the island, built dams, and provided water was no longer there to defend his people. Without his immense strength to shield them, the Balinese struggled to resist the advancing Majapahit forces. The warriors of Majapahit, led by Gajah Mada, quickly took advantage of the island’s weakened state. After a fierce but ultimately one-sided battle, Bali fell, becoming part of the vast Majapahit Empire.

Despite the betrayal that led to his downfall, Kebo Iwa’s legacy endured. His kindness, strength, and sacrifices were never forgotten by the Balinese people, who continued to honor his memory for generations. His story became a legend, passed down through time as a symbol of both heroism and caution against deception. To this day, his stone head can be found in Pura Gaduh Temple in Blahbatuh, standing as a silent guardian—a reminder of the great warrior who once protected Bali with his heart, his hands, and his unwavering devotion.

Moral of the Story

The tale of Kebo Iwa teaches us many lessons:
Strength without wisdom can be dangerous. While Kebo Iwa was powerful, he was also trusting, which led to his downfall.
True greatness lies in kindness and service to others. Despite his strength, Kebo Iwa was loved for his generosity, not just his power.
Deception can be more powerful than brute force. Gajah Mada’s cunning plan shows that intelligence and strategy often determine the outcome of history.

Even in his tragic end, Kebo Iwa remains a symbol of Bali’s resilience, courage, and undying spirit. 💛
